The plan
Salona
Before Split existed, Salona was the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. Walk among the amphitheatre, the city walls and the early Christian cemeteries, usually with very few other people around.
Klis
The fortress sits on a rock ridge guarding the only easy pass between the coast and the hinterland. From the top you see Split, the islands and the Kaštela bay. Fans may recognise it from Game of Thrones.
Trogir
The old town fills a small island between the mainland and Čiovo and is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Look for Master Radovan's portal on the cathedral of St Lawrence, then walk the waterfront to the Kamerlengo fortress.
Good to know
Salona and Klis are on uneven stone ground, so wear proper shoes. Klis has little shade; in summer the morning is the better time for it.
