Plitvice Lakes and Rastoke
Plitvice is two and a half to three hours from Split, so the day starts early. The reward is a full walk through Croatia's best-known national park, plus a quieter stop in Rastoke.

Slunj / Rastoke
The plan
Plitvice Lakes
Sixteen lakes step down a valley, linked by waterfalls and crossed by wooden boardwalks. The walk is planned around the season, the open entrances and how far you want to go, and can include the Veliki slap, the tallest waterfall in Croatia, and an electric boat across the largest lake.
Rastoke
In Slunj, the Slunjčica river splits into small falls before joining the Korana, and old wooden water mills stand right on top of them. A short walk and a late lunch before the drive home.
Good to know
Plan for 11 to 12 hours. In summer, buy park tickets online for a set entry time; tickets are paid separately. Wear walking shoes and bring a layer, as the park is cooler than the coast.
